WHEREAS the Government of Canada has implemented the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to financially assist those in dire need during the COVID-19 pandemic;
AND WHEREAS many individuals that applied for CERB were single women, single parents, and low-income citizens who were without employment;
AND WHEREAS when the CERB allowance was merged with Employment Insurance Benefits in the fall of 2020, the Federal Government stated that they would have tax withheld similar to EI benefits;
AND WHEREAS the recipients are now faced with an added burden of paying unexpected taxes on the CERB, which they can ill afford;
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Council for the Municipality of East Ferris supports resolution No. 21-195 from the Township of McKellar and urge the Federal Government to address this serious issue and consider giving disadvantage single women, single parents and low-income citizens a tax break for 2020 or applying a tax credit for the year 2021;
AND FURTHER that this resolution be forwarded to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Federal Minister of Finance, our local Member of Parliament and the Township of McKellar.
