Councillor Champagne brought forward the following Notice of Motion.
Mayor Rochefort read the following statement:
Last fall, it was disappointing to hear from residents of East Ferris that their membership in the Mattawa North Bay First Nations was revoked. I understand that the recent formation of the North Bay French River Algonquins is a direct result of this retroactive tightening of AOO membership. It is good to see citizens like Richard Champagne stepping up to ensure fairness and inclusion for all East Ferris residents who legitimately claim to be Algonquin.
It is also good to see the newly formed Algonquins of North Bay French River advocating in their land claim that Crown land, such as Mattawa River Provincial Park, be preserved for recreational purposes. I personally feel that this group is quite capable of disseminating their own information, but I assume that they have made a formal request for our assistance in doing so.
Overall, I think the Council is on the right track in prioritizing building relationships with all groups. And while we should not act on behalf of any one group, especially in the context of a land claim and the direct financial benefits associated with it, it is good to strive to open the lines of communication as we strive to be responsive to all citizens. Only by opening the channels of communication can we find a solution to the land claim issues that impact East Ferris. And so, ultimately, as this resolution simply calls for information sharing, and as relationship building involves information sharing, for that reason, I support it with a yes vote and ask that my comments be associated with my vote.
